On December 8, 1991 the Russian leader, Boris Yeltsin, the Ukrainian leader, Leonid Kravchuk and the Belarussian leader, Stanislav Shushkevitch met at a Belarussian Lodge in Belavezhskaya Pushcha, near the Polish border to sign the Belavezha Accords. The Accords in effect dissolved the Soviet Union. I took pictures at the airport, when Leonid Kravchuk arrived in Belarus for the meeting and provide some background in chapters 5 and 7 of
Picnic at the Iron Curtain. The summer pictures are from my first visit to Belarus in 1988. Click on a picture for a slide show.
