Ukraine Maidan

In November 2013 people gathered in the maidan (Independence Square) in Kyiv (Kiev), protesting then President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision not to sign a European Union accession agreement. In February 2014 at least 88 people were killed in fighting in Kyiv when snipers opened fire on protesters. President Yanukovych fled to Russia. At the end of February 2014 pro-Russian gunmen seized key buildings in the Crimean capital, Simferopol. Crimea was annexed by Russia in March 2014. In April 2014 trouble spread to the Eastern Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. I visited Ukraine in April 2014 and took these pictures. For more pictures from Ukraine, including Donetsk and other regions, look at the subheadings under Ukraine on the country tab. Click on a picture for a slide show.
