By November 1991, Russia sent troops down to Chechnya, which was trying to break away from Russia. I travelled to the Chechen capital Grozny during the show down and interviewed General Dzhokhar Dudayev who had been voted, in a referendum, president of a Chechen-Ingush republic. I write about this in Chapter 2 of Picnic at the Iron Curtain. Click on a picture to see a slide show with captions.
