Chapter 2 of Picnic at the Iron Curtain tells the story of three young East Germans who visited during the summer of 1989, when I lived in Budapest. One wanted to escape to the West. She succeeded in a picnic at the iron curtain arranged by a Hungarian opposition party and supported by Otto van Habsburg. Three months later, the Berlin Wall fell. I visited Berlin two days after the wall was breached and took pictures from the East Berlin side, where soldiers still barred access to the wall. Click on a picture for a slideshow with captions.
